What Is AEO, and Should You Actually Care Yet?

Key takeaways

  • AEO is not a new discipline. It is SEO with the answer extracted and moved to the top of the page.
  • Answer engines quote pages that answer the question plainly in the first 80 words, then earn the right to elaborate.
  • The query market is real: “what is aeo” pulls 720 searches a month in India and “answer engine optimization” another 1,000 (Semrush, India database, August 2026).
  • Most of the AEO checklist is structural hygiene: question-shaped headings, FAQ schema, direct answers. You should have been doing it anyway.
  • Care enough to restructure your best pages this quarter. Do not care enough to sign an AEO retainer.

Quick answer

Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) is the practice of structuring your content so AI answer engines, think ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google’s AI Overviews, can lift your answer and cite you when someone asks a question. In practice that means answering the query in the first 80 words, phrasing headings as real questions, and adding FAQ schema. AEO is not a replacement for SEO. It is SEO with the answer extracted to the top.

The loudest people in marketing right now want you to believe SEO is dead and the only survivors will be the ones paying for an AEO retainer. Same people, same deck, new acronym. Let’s get real.

I run the content programme on this site: a young site, built answer-first from the start, with no legacy domain authority to lean on. So when I answer “should you care yet”, the answer comes from working the problem, not from a consultant’s slide.

Here is what AEO actually is, where it genuinely differs from SEO, and the honest version of what to do about it.

What does answer engine optimisation actually mean?

AEO is optimising to be the answer, not just the result. Classic SEO competes for a position on a results page and hopes for the click. AEO competes to be the sentence the machine reads out.

The shift matters because behaviour shifted first. People now ask ChatGPT or Perplexity a full question and get one synthesised answer with a handful of citations. Ten blue links became three citations. If you are not quotable, you are invisible.

The demand side is measurable too. Semrush’s India database shows “what is aeo” at 720 searches a month with a keyword difficulty of 35, and “answer engine optimization” at 1,000 searches (August 2026). Marketers are Googling how to stop depending on Google. Sit with that irony for a moment.

How is AEO different from SEO?

Here is my position, stated plainly: AEO is not a separate discipline. It is SEO with the answer extracted to the top. Read that again, because it decides your budget. You do not need a new team, a new tool stack or a new agency. You need your existing pages restructured so the answer leads.

Notice what the table does not contain: a new skill. If your content already answers real questions with real specifics, AEO is a formatting pass. If it does not, no acronym will save you.

Do answer engines actually send you anything?

Here is the mechanic that matters. A visitor referred by an answer engine arrives having already read a summary of your argument. The machine briefed them before they landed, so they behave like warm conversations, not cold clicks. The volumes are small everywhere right now, but the quality of the visit is different in kind.

Here’s the kicker. This site currently ranks for exactly 3 keywords in Semrush’s tracking, and that is precisely why the structural argument matters. Answer engines cite passages, not domain authority: they reward pages that answer, not domains that spent a decade accumulating rank. For a small site, that is the most level playing field on the internet right now.

What did I actually change in my workflow?

Every post answers the title question in the opening section

The quick answer block you read at the top of this post is the play itself. Direct definition, first 80 words, no throat-clearing. Machines lift it, and impatient humans thank you for it.

Headings became questions people actually type

Not “Our perspective on answer engines”. Instead: “How is AEO different from SEO?” One question per heading, one direct answer beneath it. Every section becomes a liftable passage.

FAQ blocks with schema on every post

Structured data is how you speak to the machine in its own grammar. It takes minutes per post and it is the single most mechanical, most skippable-looking step people skip. None of this replaces the boring compounding work, it feeds it: I have written before about why a content strategy compounds while campaigns evaporate. AEO is a way to harvest that compounding earlier.

The operator move: pick your ten most visited pages, add a quick-answer block at the top and an FAQ with schema at the bottom, and leave everything else alone. That is one working day of effort. Then measure mentions for a quarter before you spend another rupee on this.

What did I refuse to change?

I refused to chase every acronym variant. “Generative engine optimization” runs 2,400 monthly searches in India at keyword difficulty 70, and “ai seo” runs 4,400 at the same difficulty (Semrush, August 2026). Fighting KD 70 head terms with a young site is donating your labour to the algorithm. I parked both for a later cycle and took the winnable query instead.

And I refused to sand the voice off. An answer engine can quote a bland page, but only a human being decides to come back, subscribe and hire you. Write for the reader, structure for the machine, in that order. This sits inside a bigger reshuffle of what is worth learning, which I have mapped in the AI marketing skills that matter in 2026.

So should you actually care yet?

Yes, at the level of hygiene. No, at the level of panic. If your content answers nothing, AEO is the excuse to fix that. If it already answers real questions, this is a restructuring pass, not a reinvention.

My challenge to you: take your single best page and restructure it this week. Answer in the first 80 words, question-shaped headings, FAQ schema at the bottom. Then ask ChatGPT the question that page answers, and see who gets cited. That experiment costs an hour and settles the argument better than any post, including this one.

Frequently asked questions

Is AEO replacing SEO?

No. Answer engines feed on the same crawlable, credible, well-structured content that SEO produces. Treat AEO as an answer-first layer on top of your SEO, not a successor to it.

What is the difference between AEO and GEO?

Mostly the label. GEO, generative engine optimisation, covers broadly the same practice of getting cited inside AI-generated answers. Different consultants coined different acronyms, but the structural work underneath is the same.

How do you measure AEO success?

Track three things: referral sessions from AI surfaces such as chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai, how often your brand is cited when you ask the major answer engines your key questions, and branded search volume over time. No single AEO rank tracker is worth paying for yet.

Do you need special tools for AEO?

No. You need a content system that supports FAQ schema, headings phrased as real questions, and the discipline to answer within the first 80 words. Tools can come later, if ever.

Should a small website bother with AEO?

Especially a small website. Answer engines cite the best passage, not the biggest domain, so a precise answer on a young site can beat a vague one on a large site. That is the most level playing field small publishers have had in years.
